The Role: Senior Geospatial Data Scientist
We are seeking a highly skilled individual with expertise in geospatial data processing within the forestry sector, remote sensing science, machine learning, and carbon accounting. This role involves designing and implementing algorithms, conducting carbon project due diligence, and optimizing code for production—all while adapting to evolving organizational needs. Flexibility and managing shifting priorities are essential for success in this dynamic, interdisciplinary position.
Responsibilities
- Lead carbon development projects using carbon accounting protocols (e.g., VM0047, VM0048) to produce accurate deliverables.
- Conduct advanced remote sensing analyses, including forest benchmarking, biomass estimation, LUCC analysis, and deforestation risk modeling.
- Design and implement algorithms for REDD+ and ARR assessments, ensuring efficiency and scalability.
- Process and manage geospatial data with tools like GEE, GDAL/QGIS, and Xarray.
- Develop innovative forest monitoring approaches leveraging scientific advancements.
- Apply machine learning techniques (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) for predictive modeling of complex datasets.
- Collaborate with the technical team to deliver scalable solutions and optimize code pipelines.
- Act as the primary client contact, ensuring clear communication regarding deliverables and progress.
- Mentor junior team members and support recruitment to build a high-performing team.
Must-Have Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree with 3+ years of experience or Ph.D. in Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in remote sensing with active and passive sensors for forestry applications.
- Proficiency in carbon accounting protocols (e.g., VM0047, VM0048) and tools like VT0007.
- Advanced Python programming and experience with geospatial tools (GEE, GDAL, QGIS/PyQGIS, Xarray) and Git.
- Experience with distributed systems for large-scale geospatial data processing.
- Proven ability in algorithm design and optimization for spatial analysis.
- Professional Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in team collaboration, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
- Ability to interface effectively with clients.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch) for predictive modeling.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies in digital forest monitoring and dMRV systems.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) for large-scale data processing.
- Knowledge of additional programming languages such as R or Javascript

Salary Range: $121,000 - $168,000. This range does not include a geo modifier applied to both US and international candidates.
