The Role: Senior Tropical Forest Ecologist
We are seeking an experienced tropical forest ecologist with expertise in carbon accounting. The role requires developing novel ecological analyses, translating carbon methodologies into efficient Python workflows, conducting net GHG assessments, designing monitoring plans for potential carbon projects, and representing our science to clients while adapting to evolving organizational needs. Flexibility and managing shifting priorities are essential for success in this dynamic, interdisciplinary role.
Responsibilities
- Conduct carbon project GHG assessments applying carbon accounting methodologies and protocols such as Verra’s VM0047, among others
- Design comprehensive ecological analyses, e.g., native restoration and assisted natural regeneration GHG ex-ante removals, natural risk assessments, leakage GHG emission assessments
- Design monitoring plans that adhere to specific standards and methodologies
- Apply deep expertise in tropical forest ecology to inform and enhance project design
- Write clear and concise project reports
- Act as a primary point of contact with clients, ensuring clear communication regarding deliverables, progress, and project outcomes
- Collaborate closely with:
- Science team members to drive project success and innovation
- Project teams to successfully support projects on the ground
- Proposal teams to develop high-quality project proposals
- Tech team to automate analyses
- Conduct thorough literature reviews to support the development of carbon accounting analyses and products
- Identify talent gaps and lead recruitment efforts to build a high-performing, multidisciplinary Science team
- Mentor junior Science team members in developing ecological analyses and translating carbon methodologies into efficient Python code
Must-Have Qualifications
- Education: Advanced degree in Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field (MSc with 5+ years of experience, or PhD with 2+ years of experience)
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in tropical forest ecology
- Expertise in carbon accounting protocols, particularly VM0047 and associated tools (e.g., VMD0054), and carbon development deliverables
- Proficiency in Python, including an ability to develop efficient workflows
- Professional Skills:
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience effectively collaborating across disciplines
- Solid understanding of and experience applying statistical analyses, including uncertainty quantification
- Ability to assess limits to natural regeneration and forest growth potential through personal observations and questioning of local experts during project site visits
- Personal Attributes:
- A deep love for nature and a desire to help build a more integrated future for humanity

- Experience using Verra’s Improved Forest Management methodology
- Experience working with clients

Salary Range: $138,000 - $160,000. This range does not include a geo modifier applied to both US and international candidates.
