Trevi Systems is a forward osmosis desalination company focusing on energy-efficient water purification from a variety of applications: saltwater, brackish water, and industrial wastewater to clean water. Trevi Systems has designed a forward osmosis system using a proprietary membrane and a unique draw solution that allows the draw solute to be separated from the recovered water using thermal heat rather than high-pressure pumps. The process has the ability to desalinate ocean water at 1/8th the electrical energy of current RO systems. The Trevi FO system uses ‘waste heat’ or low-grade thermal heat at 75 °C to drive the FO desalination process. Trevi System’s heat requirements are approximately 50 MJ/m³. Since the energy consumption is so low, the brine stream generated may be concentrated to either very low or very high recovery rates without a noticeable change in electrical energy consumption, allowing the system to be tailored to the requirements of the environment.
