What We're Looking For
Novi is building a data platform to help brands understand their products and ingredients and a marketplace to help brands purchase ingredients from suppliers. The industry we're tackling is fragmented and complicated, so we are looking for someone who is excited by the challenge of turning complex and ambiguous requirements into simple, elegant, and robust products.
Reporting into the CEO, you will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to build the industry’s first algorithmic “vetting engine” to help brands, retailers, and suppliers assess which products meet various clean/sustainable specification

What you’ll Achieve

  • Responsible for building and implementing the scientific algorithms and roadmap that assess every material listed on Novi
  • Identify new features and functionalities to improve the user experience in Novi’s product formulation software
  • Manage product safety and sustainability criteria and lists across a wide range of categories including but not limited to health, environment, animal welfare, and social justice affairs.
  • Drive growth and engagement by providing formulation consultation for brands looking to meet their safety and sustainability goals as they develop products.
  • Work closely with software developers to inform product requirements for gathering, structuring and processing data
  • Support the Supply Operations team in sourcing and maintaining a robust library of innovative and sustainable materials for users to discover on Novi Marketplace.
  • Support business development teams as scientific representative on sales calls
  • Stay current with regulatory updates and industry standards

About You

  • You have a BS in Chemistry with a minor on environmental studies
  • You have a background in Green Chemistry and Toxicology assessment to conduct hazard and risk assessments for chemicals used in the personal care and cosmetics industry.
  • You have at least 4 years of experience in the personal care & cosmetics industry;
  • with direct experience in product development, regulatory, formulation and safety assessment for material categories including ingredients, packaging and fragrance.
  • You have at least 3 years of experience developing and implementing chemical policies by creating restricted substances lists for ingredients and packaging materials and classifying the prohibited, restricted, approved lists.
  • You have at least 2 years of experience building questionnaires for ingredient and packaging suppliers to gather relevant chemical data to support the material selection process.
  • You are able to screen chemicals using comparative Chemical Hazard Assessment (CHA) to identify safe, functional alternatives to possibly toxic or otherwise undesirable ingredients. These includes comprehensive review of existing health data and environmental impacts from a wide range of sources, including but not limited to authoritative lists, government agency databases, peer-reviewed journals, Cosmetics Ingredient Review Panel studies, and chemical supplier information
  • You have conducted or managed out-sourced structural analysis reviews (e.g. computational modeling) to help make informed and precautionary chemical analysis when data gaps exists
  • You have worked with third party testing facilities to outline testing methods, instrumentation, and allowable limits for possible impurities/contamination in ingredients
  • You have at least 3 years of experience working with contract manufacturers to manage the product development lifecycle from ideation to launch, including project management, stakeholder analysis, qualitative and quantitative product testing
  • You have at least 3 years of experience with managing regulatory requirements, authoritative lists, guidelines for testing and labeling
  • You have at least 3 years of experience in green product marketing in compliance with the FTC guidelines and other regulatory requirements
